I am going to be a little vulnerable for a second. So be nice…..you might just be surprised when you read: 8 Signs You May Have a Hormonal Imbalance .

I am going to let you in on a little secret!

I hate dieting! Seriously, I do! But that isn’t the whole secret….

For that very reason alone is why I DO NOT diet. I have a lifestyle of healthy eating habits. I make sure I eat well, not for vanity reasons, but because I feel horrid if I do not eat right. I do it for my health, not just my looks. Don’t get me wrong it feels nice when I can fit into trendy clothes. That is a major plus, but I really eat healthy because for me to truly feel good I have to eat right.

My Story

I have a lifelong history of hormonal issues and I had an early hysterectomy, so my hormones can really go haywire some days. I don’t know about you, but I want to feel my best everyday and I want to be here for my kids for a longtime, not to mention I want to bug Chris for a long time more, as well.

But here is my real secret, despite what you may think by reading this blog….. I do not feel like eating well some days. It won’t hurt me if I take a break from my healthy eating habits for one week….. or will it?

Yes, it will! It always will!

Now before you come at me…. I do not eat well and stay on my healthy lifestyle every single day, but on the days I do not, I have tools I pull out of my pocket to help with symptoms, but that is for another day and another blog.

On the days I do not eat well, I find myself depressed, my hormones are crazy, my anxiety is in full force, I don’t sleep well and I find some unwanted pudginess on the hips, thighs and tummy. The reason why I am telling you all of this is because I am real and I straight shoot it with you. I always have and always will. Also, because I want you to learn from my mistakes.

Doing the right thing, whether for yourself, your kids or God is always hard. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows. It sucks some days and the temptations can get the best of you if you let them.

But, here’s the thing: if you don’t have a healthy lifestyle you pay for it and so will your hormones. #TrueStory

It finally hit me one day, I had to make a change, a full lifestyle change. No more splurging and loosing all self-control. It was time for a full lifestyle change and ditch the drama, cravings and feeling rotten all of the time. Not just for my waistline, but for my overall health. One weekend I laid in my own filth and guilt literally. Guilt of indulging too much and filth because I was exhausted, my body hurt and I was depressed and anxiety stricken. I was sick from the inside-out. As I laid in my tub soaking in epsom salt I realized I was the one who kept doing this to myself.

So here’s the deal, some women suffer from hormonal imbalances and don’t even realize it. Some women go through life thinking: this is it, I have had babies and this is just what it is like after you reach a certain age or after you’ve had kids. But, I am here to tell you: NO it doesn’t have to be like that! You can feel better! With a healthy lifestyle change and a few tweaks you could be well on your way to balanced hormones and a healthier you!

8 Signs You May Have a Hormonal Imbalance

1) Weight Gain & Unwanted Belly Fat:

It is true, lifestyle diet and exercise alone cannot always maintain a healthy weight unfortunately! Many women have underlying hormonal imbalances that make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. Unaddressed insulin resistance is one of the most common. Changes in your eating habits can help tremendously. Start by eliminating processed foods, sugars and wheat.

I found myself gaining weight around the middle even when I was training for a marathon and having a persistent workout routine. Many women, including myself, have underlying hormonal imbalances that make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. Unaddressed or emerging insulin resistance is one of the most common. Small changes in diet can be made to help this issue, such as eliminating processed foods, sugars and wheat.

2) Cravings:

Cravings are awful when my hormones are crazy! Whether I crave chips, dairy, sweets or wine, I look back later after I have consumed it and wondered why? Here’s the reason why…… Common causes of cravings and excess eating are adrenal fatigue, insulin resistance, and other hormonal imbalances. Again, minimizing sugars, alcohol, dairy and wheat — although difficult — not only will help control cravings, but your digestive issues as well.

3) Sweating:

For many women, including myself, I had night sweats almost every single night. Some women also experience hot flashes throughout the day. For myself, no deodorant would help, ever. No matter what I did the sweating was horrible and I could not control the odor. Sorry, TMI, right?! But, true!

4) Digestion Problems & Bloating:

Gas, bloating and slow digestion are common hormonal problems that aren’t usually picked up by doctors. Make sure you are eating clean foods and you chew your food thoroughly. When you do not chew your food thoroughly or eat foods that are loaded with nutrients you could be depriving your body of well needed nutrients, not just for your hormones but for elsewhere in the body as well.

5) Poor Sleeping Habits:

The cycle of poor sleeping habits and insomnia can cause physical stress and increase cortisol levels, which directly causes many hormonal imbalances. I never experienced insomnia, but I had poor sleeping habits. I woke up a lot and found myself stressing in the middle of the night about going back to sleep which directly caused lack of sleep.

6) Loss of Muscle Mass & Belly Fat:

When your endocrine system is being attacked there’s an underproduction of certain hormones and an overproduction of others (mainly cortisol). This makes your body store fat for future use, making an increase in belly fat a clue to adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue can be caused by many things and is common with hormonal imbalances. I experienced extreme belly fat! That was always a clue-in if my body and hormones are out of sorts. No matter how much you workout it is hard to get this under control without the right nutrients and healthy lifestyle.

7) Fatigue:

Oh my goodness, I cannot make it past 1 pm without a pick-me-up, but little did I know, it isn’t normal to feel sluggish, scattered or mentally foggy at anytime of the day. Instead of constantly reaching for coffee (although not terrible), that will only help for a little while, make some lifestyle dietary changes, such as eliminating wheat and most grains, will help stabilize your blood sugar.

8) Anxiety & Depression:

If you are experiencing the overwhelming feelings of not-feeling-yourself, it isn’t always the time to reach for the meds. Anxiety and depression are clues that you have an imbalance of some kind, toxicity, are overworked, stressed out, and most likely aren’t nourishing your body the way it needs. (All can lead to hormonal imbalances.)

Remember that lifestyle change I keep talking about? Well, now is the time more than ever to start, if not for anything, but for this reason alone. With a great clean eating lifestyle and proper herbs it can be treated. Don’t let this go untreated. DO NOT ignore it! Listen to your inner voice and take the actions necessary to meet your needs.

9) Low Libido:

Although this slowly starts with lack of sleep, this sign can be the most noticeable of all. Without quality sleep our sex hormone production can slowly diminish.

So What Do We Do If We Have The Signs For Hormonal Imbalance?

The better question would be: How Do We Try & Correct It Without Medication?

  1. Change your lifestyle. Eat more nutrient enriched foods. Eat clean, eliminating processed foods, dairy and wheat & grains.
  2. Exercise, less cardio more strength training using your own body weight. Start with Pilates or Yoga and work your way up.

Once you start with these two things you slowly start to see changes. Changes in your sleeping habits, libido, anxiety, depression, belly fat and so much more. Don’t expect changes over night, but with time, effort and prayer you can get through this. I am a walking testimony. I was determined to reverse these signs on my own without pharmaceutical drugs and I did and still am! It is a lifestyle transformation and it feels great! No more roller coaster of hormones, no more feeling terrible. I now have a lifestyle full of fun, wellness and great foods. Don’t believe me check out my recipes!
